Why Shop Local? The Facts

We could spend all day talking about why you should shop local, but the facts speak for themselves. When you shop local, you help keep your community thriving, which keeps everyone happy. Check out a few interesting facts from our friends at City of Denton below.

  • Only one in six adults purchases locally available products and services. If just half the Denton population spent $50 each month in Denton's independently owned stores, their purchases would generate more than $6.5 million dollars per year in sales.

  • Each time you spend money on dining, retail, or entertainment, you are charged an 8.25 percent sales tax. A portion of that sales tax goes to the city in which you buy the goods or services. When you shop in Denton, you support our city services such as the police and fire departments, streets, libraries, and parks.

Shop Small takes place on the Saturday after Thanksgiving of every year — to encourage people to Shop Small and bring more holiday shopping to small businesses. In 2011, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution in support of the day. Today, all 50 states participate in this incredible day of opportunity to strengthen local and national economy.

As shopping small catches on in communities everywhere, Small Business Saturday continues to evolve from from a cause to a day of community celebration. 90% of consumers surveyed said Small Business Saturday has had a positive impact on their community. Because a visit to the family-owned framing shop or a stop at the neighborhood taco truck not only supports our local economies, it promotes more vibrant communities.

This year, we would like to say thanks to the Denton Chamber of Commerce for partnering with us this year on Shop Small, as well as our fellow partnerships. We as a community are blessed to partner with Shop Small Saturday, and bring these incredible benefits and opportunities to our local businesses. We know our community truly loves and cherishes the businesses and owners we are blessed to have, why not extend that love and care all the way through the holiday shopping season?

Join us for this and every Shop Small Saturday.

Shop Small Saturday selfie contest

During Shop Small Saturday, certain locations will feature a Selfie Station, where customers are encouraged to take selfies within the business, tag the business, and post the image to Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag “ #ShopSmallDenton.” When customers complete this fun, simple process, they are automatically entered to win our Grand Prize! We will announce the winner of said prize on Sunday once we are able to count up all of the participating submissions!

We are so excited to feature this contest as part of our Shop Small Saturday festivities. Be sure to follow Denton MSA and Denton Chamber on Facebook and Instagram for important updates on the Grand Prize, participating locations, and more.
