Denton Main Street Association's 17th Annual Wassail Fest
What is Wassail? It is just a fussy old English word for hot cider. Some downtown merchants will stir up their best recipe to give free tastings for all ages during the festivities of the annual Denton Holiday Lighting Festival and on the following day. Wassail Fest, a tasting event held during annual Denton Holiday Lighting Festival on Friday, Dec. 4th, will also offer an afternoon of tastings and other holiday fun on Saturday, Dec. 5th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The expansion of hours for wassail tasting allows even more visitors to enjoy this downtown Denton tradition all weekend. The Wassail Stops, in various merchant locations around downtown, will be open Friday night, Dec. 4th from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Dec. 5th from 2 to 5 p.m., with some special activities. Tasting is free and open to all ages. This year 38 restaurants, stores and business member locations around Downtown will participate. Some Wassail Stops are open Friday night during Holiday Lighting and on Saturday afternoon. See more on Saturday activities and a list of all Wassail Stops below.
Some special Saturday Wassail Fest activities will include:
· Chalk Festivus and live music at A Creative Art Studio, 227 W. Oak St
· “Make and Take” a craft and hear the St. Andrew’s Singers with SCRAP, Artist Enclave of Denton County at the Sweetwater Grill and Tavern, 115 S. Elm
· Seniors in Motion, 111 Industrial Street, will have free spine screenings with Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center and Backster, the Chiropractic Panda Bear, will also be there taking pictures with kids of all ages. Enter our contest to win a $200 Holiday Shopping Spree.
· History of Wassail presentations by Kingdom of Ansteorra re-enactment group at 200 W. Oak sidewalk
· Food Drive held by the Denton County Bar Association at the corner of Oak/Elm on the courthouse lawn (bring non-perishable items and monetary donations that will be donated to Our Daily Bread)
· Selfies with Santa (check out contest details and Santa locations on social media). Bring your camera or phone!
The public can cast their votes for their favorite Wassail on Friday evening during Denton’s annual Holiday Lighting Festival, OR on Saturday between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.. Voters are eligible for door prizes from participating merchants. Ballots will be available Friday night and Saturday afternoon at the Wassail Information Booth on W. Hickory Street next to the old Evers Hardware Building, 109 W. Hickory Street. Online voting information can be found on Facebook at Downtown Denton – Denton Main Street Association.

Denton Main Street Association hosted the 16th annual event on Saturday, September 12th in 2015, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. around the square and beyond, 110 W. Hickory Street with record attendance, car entries, and Chalk Fest entries.
This event featured a hot rod, classic and custom car, truck and motorcycle with multiple car, truck and motorcycle classes and great trophies! Cash prizes and awesome art trophies were given for Best of Show winner in car, truck and motorcycle class.
Festival-goers enjoyed an array of activities throughout the day, including arts/crafts vendors, hands-on arts/crafts and games, Chalk Fest, festival foods, live music and "Attic Treasure" appraisals. And, checked out all the cool shops around downtown.
This year the Chalk Fest had some fantastic chalk drawings to add spark and life to the sidewalks downtown at W. Oak near the corners of Cedar and Elm streets. Artists of all ages contributed to a fantastic display to stroll through during the event and for days after the fun.
Antique appraisers provided information on family treasures and heirlooms. Appraisers and dealers specialized in general antiques, art, and jewelry.
Live Music was on the lawn all day entertaining crowds starting at 10 a.m. with Joe Pat Hennan and Jeff Glover - Texas Singers/Songwriters, followed by Woody's Rampage playing rock and blues, and the day ended with High School Ceasar.

Denton Main Street Association will present a Tunes Fall Series starting October 4th and will run every Sunday in October from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on the Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square lawn. Grab a blanket or chairs, a bite to eat and settle in for a late afternoon of live music in beautiful downtown Denton! Come early and check out some of the shops and stay late to enjoy dinner in downtown.
